Description

This is a compilation of eight frames taken from a video showing the transit of the International Space Station across the face of the sun. The Lunt telescope has an h-alpha filter, allowing a more detailed view of the solar surface. The data was captured at 10:30 on Thursday, August 29.

I had two telescopes and cameras running at the same time, with the image here taken from inside our rooftop observatory, and a second telescope on the lakeside patio. That morning, the seeing was terrible, with gusts up to 25 mph and sustained winds of around 15, meaning that I had to shield my second telescope from the Lake Michigan spray while it captured. The high clouds parted for long enough to get this shot, and it started raining less than an hour afterwards.

I'm a little disappointed that the framing was off on this one, I would've liked to have caught more of the transit, but I am pleased at the detail visible across the satellite. I learned a lot from this attempt, which I'll be able to use in the future.
